Salt produced in the Setouchi region was brought to Edo by salt ships during the Edo period. When Edo first established its salt demand, it relied on local salt (locally produced salt) produced in areas along the coast of Edo Bay, such as Gyotoku in Shimousa and Musashi Daishigawara. However, as Edo developed, local salt alone was no longer enough to meet the demand, and the city was forced to rely on salt from the 10 provinces of the Setouchi region. Salt from the Setouchi region began to flow into Edo around the Genna era (1615-24), and initially the main sources were Awa Saiden salt, Banshu Arai salt, and Banshu Ako salt. According to the memorandum "Man no Kaku" written by Enomoto Yazaemon, a merchant from Kawagoe in Bushu, 230 salt ships arrived in Edo between November 28 and December 5, 1652 (Shoo 1), of which 100 were Arai ships. At that time, 250 to 300 salt ships arrived in Edo each year, carrying approximately 500,000 bales of cargo.
