Puccini's four-act opera, composed to a libretto by G. Giacosa and L. Illica based on Scenes from Bohemian Life, a collection of short stories compiled by French author Henri Murger (1822-61) from his own experiences, premiered in Turin in 1896. The story is set in an attic in the Latin Quarter of Paris around 1830, where four young bohemians aspiring to be artists live a carefree life. The opera tells the story of a tender love affair between Rodolfo, a poet, one of the bohemians, who falls in love with Mimi, a poor seamstress who lives next door, after coming to ask for light from a burnt out candle.

プッチーニの4幕のオペラ。フランスの作家ミュルジェHenri Murger(1822‐61)の自己体験によってまとめ上げた短編集《ボヘミアンの生活情景》に基づくG.ジャコーザとL.イリカの台本に作曲，1896年トリノで初演した。物語は，1830年ころのパリのラテン区，芸術家を志す4人の若いボヘミアンたちが気ままな生活を送っている屋根裏部屋。消えたろうそくの火をもらいにきたのが縁で恋におちたボヘミアンの一人，詩人のロドルフォと隣に住む貧しいお針娘ミミの淡い恋物語。
