1472‐1545 Founder of the Sur Dynasty (1538-55) in northern India. Reigned 1538-45. Originally named Farid Khan, he was born to a small Afghan feudal lord in Bihar. He was nicknamed Sher Khan (sher meaning "tiger") after killing a tiger as a young man. He later served under Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire. During the reign of the second emperor, Humayun, he expanded his power throughout Bihar, and by 1538 he had taken control of all of Bihar and Bengal, establishing what was essentially an independent kingdom (the Sur Dynasty), and taking the name Sher Shah.
