…In the early Heian period, they introduced techniques from Chinese ceramics and began firing full-scale ash-glazed pottery, and eventually green-glazed pottery as well, solidifying their position as the center of ceramic production in Japan. Their products were mainly imitations of imported Chinese ceramics and metal Buddhist vessels, and were shipped nationwide, mainly from the Kinai region, from Iwate Prefecture in the north to Fukuoka Prefecture in the south, and were presented to the central government under the name of Owari porcelain (porcelain). In the mid-Heian period, this glazing technique spread throughout the Tokai region and even to Omi, but in the late Heian period, it ceded its central position to the Tono region of Gifu Prefecture. …
