Georges Sadoul and other film historians around the world have defined Swedish films by their Nordic "mysticism." Leslie Halliwell has rephrased it as "romantic pessimism." In any case, this tendency was first made known to the world by Victor Sjöström (The Girl from the Bog House, 1917, The Immortality of the Soul, 1920) and Maurits Styler (A Snowstorm, 1919, The Story of Gösta Berling, 1924), who transformed the novels of the Swedish female author Lagerlöf, which are characterized by a subtle interweaving of legend and reality, into "moving beauty of form," marking a glorious page in the history of silent films.
