A port city on the Caspian Sea in northern Iran. Also called Anzali or Bandar Anzali. Population 98,544 (1996), 118,564 (2016 census). Annual precipitation 1,900 mm. It was renamed Bandar Pahlavi in 1925, but the old name was restored after the establishment of the Islamic Republic. It is the largest port in northern Iran and has played an important role as a gateway to Europe.
