Lahu people (English spelling) Lā hù zú

Japanese: ラフ族(拉祜族) - ラフぞく（英語表記）Lā hù zú

A mountain people found in the southwest of Yunnan Province, China, through Myanmar and Thailand. The population in China is about 410,000 (1990), with another 66,000 in Myanmar and 15,000 in Thailand. In Yunnan, they are concentrated in Lancang Lahu Autonomous County. Their language belongs to the Lolo-Burman group of Tibeto-Burman languages. Originally, they had no written language, but after liberation from China, a new script was created. They are divided into Black Lahu, Yellow Lahu, and White Lahu groups, but their social history, language, customs, and habits are said to be basically the same.

中国雲南省の南西部からミャンマー，タイにかけて分布する山地民族。人口は中国内で約41万余(1990)で，そのほかミャンマーに約6万6000，タイに約1万5000が居住するといわれる。雲南ではとくに瀾滄（らんそう）ラフ(拉祜)族自治県に集中する。言語はチベット･ビルマ語派のロロ･ビルマ語群に属する。元来，文字はなかったが，中国領内では解放後，新文字がつくられた。黒ラフ，黄ラフ，白ラフの群に分かれるが，彼らの社会史，言語，風俗習慣は基本的には一致するといわれる。
