Rask, Rasmus (Kristian)
Born: November 22, 1787, Brenekile
Died: November 14, 1832. Copenhagen. Danish linguist. In 1818, he published Undersögelse om det gamle Nordiske eller Islandske Sprogs Oprindelse (An Investigation into the Origin of Old Norse or Icelandic), which showed the regularity of the phonological correspondence between Germanic languages and Greek, Latin, Baltic, and Slavic languages, suggesting that they were closely related to each other. For this reason, he is called the father of comparative linguistics, along with F. Bopp. He also studied Finno-Ugric languages, and collected documents on Persian and Pali, contributing to the subsequent development of comparative linguistics.
