Hiwasa [town] - Hiwasa

Japanese: 日和佐[町] - ひわさ

A former town in Kaifu District, southeastern Tokushima Prefecture. The main settlement is at the mouth of the Hiwasa River, and the Mugi Line passes through it. Coastal fishing is thriving. It is home to Yakuoji Temple, the 23rd of the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage Sites, and Ohama Beach, a spawning ground for sea turtles (a natural monument). It is part of the Muroto-Anan Coast Quasi-National Park. In March 2006, it merged with Yuki Town, Kaifu District, to become Minami Town, Kaifu District. 117.69 ^km2 . 5,694 people (2003).

徳島県南東部，海部(かいふ)郡の旧町。主集落は日和佐川河口にあり，牟岐(むぎ)線が通じる。沿岸漁業が盛ん。四国八十八ヵ所23番の札所薬王寺，ウミガメ（天然記念物）の産卵地大浜海岸があり，室戸阿南海岸国定公園に属する。2006年３月，海部郡由岐町と合併し町制，海部郡美波町となる。117.69km²。5694人（2003）。
