It originates in the mountains of Westphalia, Germany, flows north through the lowlands of North Germany, and empties into the North Sea near Emden. It is 372 km long, of which 238 km is navigable by boat. It is connected to the Ruhr region by the Dortmund–Ems Canal, and further to the Weser and Elbe by the Mittelland Canal.
