An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Sphingidae. It is relatively small among the moths of this family, and the group includes mainly diurnal flying species, so the Japanese name suffix Houjaku is used for all moths. The genus Macroglossum , which is the core of this group, has about 80 known species, distributed mainly in the tropics and subtropics of Southeast Asia. Twelve species are known in Japan, but the number of species increases the further south you go. Wingspan is 4-6cm. The body is thick, and the wings are short and slender. The antennae are club-shaped. It has strong flying power and a long proboscis, and like the hummingbirds of Central and South America, it stands still, vibrating its wings finely, extends its proboscis, and sucks nectar from flowers, hence the English name humming-bird moth.
