An echinoderm of the family Echinidae in the class Echinoidea. Widely distributed from the Boso Peninsula to the South Pacific Ocean, many individuals can be found among coral reefs and rocky reefs facing the open ocean. The shell is about 6cm in length, 5cm in width, and 4cm in height, with a purple-black surface. The mouth of the underside is large, taking up more than half the shell's diameter. The spines are about 3cm long, have sharp, dark green-brown tips, but are white at the tips. The spines on the ventral side are light in color. The spawning season is from July to September. ウニ綱ナガウニ科の棘皮(きよくひ)動物。房総半島から南太平洋にかけて広く分布し,サンゴ礁や外洋に面した岩礁の間に多くの個体が見られる。殻は長径6cm,短径5cm,高さ4cmほどで,殻の表面は紫黒色。下面の囲口部は大きくて殻径の半分以上も占める。とげは長さ3cmほどで,先端は鋭くとがり,暗緑褐色であるが,先端部は白い。腹面のとげの色は淡い。産卵期は7~9月。食用にはしない。【今島 実】
