German painter. Born in Cologne. Considered a representative painter of German realism in the second half of the 19th century. Inspired by Courbet and others during his stay in Paris from 1869 to 1870, he painted peasant life in a realistic style. His representative works include "Village Politicians" (1877, Winterthur, Oskar Reinhardt Collection) and "Three Women in a Church" (1882, Collection of the Hamburg Kunsthalle).

ドイツの画家。ケルン生れ。19世紀後半のドイツ写実主義を代表する画家とされる。1869年―1870年のパリ滞在中にクールベらに刺激され，以後農民の生活を写実的な筆致で描いた。代表作に《村の政治家たち》（1877年，ウィンタートゥール，オスカー・ラインハルト・コレクション），《教会の中の３人の女》（1882年，ハンブルク美術館蔵）などがある。
