OpenGL - Open G L

An API for 3D graphics developed primarily by Silicon Graphics (SGI). It is hardware and OS independent, and can be used on many platforms, including Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. It is actively used on Mac OS X, and has an easy-to-use environment for developers. It is currently managed by the standardization organization, the Khronos Group. Microsoft's DirectX also has a 3D graphics API, but since DirectX is intended for game development, it differs from OpenGL in that it also supports sound and joysticks and other controllers.

シリコングラフィックス（SGI）社が中心となって開発した、3Dグラフィックス用のAPI。ハードウェアやOSに依存しないという特徴を持ち、Windows、Mac OS X、Linuxなど多くのプラットフォームで利用できる。Mac OS Xでは積極的に活用されており、開発者が利用しやすい環境が整えられている。現在は標準化団体のクロノス・グループが管理している。マイクロソフト社のDirectXも3DグラフィックスのAPIを持つが、DirectXはゲーム開発を目的としているため、サウンドやジョイスティックなどのコントローラーもサポートしている点で、OpenGLと異なる。
