Shelta Thari - Shelta language (English spelling)

Japanese: シェルタ語 - シェルタご（英語表記）Shelta Thari

A secret language used among British nomads. Its origins are unclear, with some even suggesting it is a remnant of an esoteric language used by the Druids. It has no special writing system, but is not merely a code or cipher; it has a grammar. It first appeared in 1876 when linguist Charles Godfrey Leland collected it from nomads in London. At one time it was thought to be a dialect of the Gypsies, but linguistically the theory that it belongs to the Celtic language family gained acceptance, and some have compared it to the language of the Picts, which is said to have an even older origin.

イギリスの漂泊民の間で使用される秘密言語。系統は定かではなく，ドルイドが用いていた秘教的言語の残滓（ざんし）とする説まである。特別な表記体系はないが単なる符丁や暗号ではなく，文法をもつという。1876年に言語学者レランドCharles Godfrey Lelandが，ロンドンで漂泊民から採取したのが発端。一時はジプシーの方言と考えられたが，言語学的にはケルト語派に属するという説が有力となり，一部ではさらに古い起源をもつとされるピクト人の言語に比定された。
