…Robert Rossen (1908-66), who won the Academy Award for Best Picture for All the King's Men (1949), which portrayed a demagogue and criticized the contradictions of American democracy, produced, wrote, and directed this film. It was based on the novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. Rossen was one of the 19 people (known as the Hollywood Nineteen) who opposed the Hollywood Red Scare by the House Un-American Activities Committee, but he was branded a traitor and informer for giving friendly testimony at a 1953 hearing, and his subsequent work lacked vitality. …
