Lake Chuzenji

Japanese:
Lake Chuzenji

This lake is located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. Its area of 11.5 square kilometers is the largest of all alpine lakes in Japan. Its circumference is 23.6 kilometers. Its maximum depth is 163 meters, about 60 meters lower than the basin of Kegon Falls. The transparency of the lake's water is 8 to 10 meters, making it an oligotrophic lake, and its environmental standard for lake water is designated "AA." The Nikko Mountains Record states that it is "approximately three ri from east to west and one ri from north to south," but this is a rather exaggerated estimate, as it is actually about 6.7 kilometers east to west, a maximum of 3 kilometers north to south, and an average of 1.8 kilometers. The lake was created when the lava that created Mt. Nantai dammed the Daiya River, and the Kegon Falls came to be. At one time it was thought to have formed a large lake along with Senjogahara and Lake Sainoko, but it is now clear that each has a different origin. At the foot of the lake is the 2-meter-high Chuzenji Dam, managed by the prefecture, which regulates the amount of water that falls from the lake. Trout are released into the lake, and the fishing season is from May to September. It is the core of the natural beauty of Nikko National Park, and has been designated a national place of scenic beauty. On Kozuke Island in the lake, there is a monument that holds the remains of Shodo Shonin, and there are hotels, inns, resorts, and a campsite open in the summer around the lake. Pleasure boats are also in service. It is a 50-minute bus ride from JR Nikko Station or Tobu Nikko Station.
