...Population: 716,000 (1994). Formerly called Aynṭāb or Antep. A strategically important transportation point connecting Anatolia with Syria and Mesopotamia, it saw a remarkable transition of ruling powers, including Byzantine, Armenian, Crusader, Turk, and Arab, until it became part of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.
