Yoshida Kanetomo

Japanese: 吉田兼俱 - よしだかねとも
Yoshida Kanetomo
1435-1511 (Eikyo 7-Eisho 8)
A Shinto priest in the late Muromachi period. He was also called Urabe Kanetomo. His real name was Kanetoshi. In 1472 (Bunmei 4), he was made Junior Third Rank and Deputy Vice-Minister of Jingi, in 1489 (Entoku 1), Middle Counselor, and in 1493 (Meio 2), he was made Vice-Minister of Jingi and Danjo-daisuke. Born into a family of Yoshida Shrine priests, he perfected the doctrine of Shinto, which had been the family teaching since the Middle Ages, and breathed new life into it. In 1477, he collected taxes called "miscellaneous, one art, one role" from commoners in the seven entrances of Kyoto, and tried to use the money for the expenses of the Shinto altar but failed to pay it. In 1484, he built the Omoto Shrine, a sacred place, in Kaguraoka, and in 1489, he reported to the Imperial Court that the sacred treasures of Ise Shrine had descended upon the altar, and Ise priests such as Arakida Moritomo and nobles such as Sanjonishi Sanetaka denounced his falsehood.
