A Latin poet of the early Middle Ages, born in Treviso, northern Italy, and educated in Ravenna. He left his hometown as a young man and traveled throughout France. In about 565 he was received at the Frankish royal court in Poitiers. During this time he became acquainted with Gregory, Bishop of Tours, Radegunda, former wife of the Frankish king Chlothar I and founder of a monastery, and her adopted daughter Agnes. His friendship with these princesses allowed him to stay in the area, and he later became bishop there. His works include the epic Life of Saint Martin and other biographies of saints, but it is his dedications, odes, and hymns that have established his fame.
