Plane - Kanna

Japanese: 鉋 - かんな
Plane - Kanna
〘Noun〙 (A variation of "kana (plane)") A tool used to shave the surface of timber to make it flat and smooth. A saoganna is shaped like the curved tip of a spear, while a okeganna is used by barrel carpenters and has a wide blade with handles on both ends and is used by pushing. Nowadays, it is usually called a dai-ganna, which has a blade fitted at an angle into a hard wooden base. Kana. ※Engishiki (927), 4: "The central pillar of the main hall is taken and a single offering is made. (abbreviation) One knife and one spear." ※Muncho Diary (1530-31): "The chopsticks made of old timber are no match for a plane." [Etymology] "Kana" appears in "Shinsen Jikyo," "Jukanbon Wamyosho," and "Iroha Jiruisho," while both "Kanna" and "Kana" appear in "Kanchiin Hon Myogisho." Both forms appear in "Setsuyoshurui," but "Kanna" is more common. "Nippo Jisho" lists "Canna," but both forms are used in compound words.
