... Among planthoppers, the white-backed planthopper, the brown planthopper, and the striatellus planthopper are well-known as major rice pests. The white-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera (illustration), is called the "summer planthopper" because its peak occurs in July and August, while the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (illustration), is called the "autumn planthopper" because its peak occurs in September and October. Despite diligent research, the status of these two species of planthopper in winter in Japan has not been known.
