...This may also be why Racine changed the title to Phèdre. At the time of its premiere, it became the target of a conspiracy by anti-Racine faction, led by Mazarin's niece, the Duchess de Bouillon, and Philippe Mancini, Duke of Nevers. A tragedy of the same name by the third-rate poet Nicolas Pradon (1632-98) was performed at the rival theater, the Théâtre de Guénégaux, and mocking poems (sonnées) were exchanged between the anti-Racine faction and Racine's side. However, this conspiracy soon ended with the overwhelming victory of Racine's tragedy, and the previous theory that the failure of the premiere led to Racine's conversion is no longer accepted.
