...This may also be why Racine changed the title to Phèdre. At the time of its premiere, it became the target of a conspiracy by anti-Racine faction, led by Mazarin's niece, the Duchess de Bouillon, and Philippe Mancini, Duke of Nevers. A tragedy of the same name by the third-rate poet Nicolas Pradon (1632-98) was performed at the rival theater, the Théâtre de Guénégaux, and mocking poems (sonnées) were exchanged between the anti-Racine faction and Racine's side. However, this conspiracy soon ended with the overwhelming victory of Racine's tragedy, and the previous theory that the failure of the premiere led to Racine's conversion is no longer accepted.

…ラシーヌが表題を《フェードル》と改めたいわれもここにあろう。　初演に際しては，マザランの姪ド･ブイヨン公爵夫人とヌベール公フィリップ･マンシーニを中心とした反ラシーヌ派の〈陰謀cabale〉の的となり，三流詩人プラドンNicolas Pradon(1632‐98)による同題の悲劇がライバル劇場であるゲネゴー座で上演され，反ラシーヌ派とラシーヌ側とで嘲罵の十四行詩(ソネ)が交わされた。しかしこの陰謀は，ほどなくラシーヌ悲劇の圧倒的な勝利に終わるのであり，初演の〈挫折〉がラシーヌの回心を招いたというかつての説は現在では認められない。…
