Kamigori Uprising

...Former name of the province. Current name of Tokushima Prefecture.
[Ancient times]
An upper province belonging to the Nankaido (Engishiki). Before the Ritsuryo system, Awa was divided into two major provinces: Awanokuni in the north, where the Inbe clan was active, and Naganokuni in the south, where the Miwa-related Ama fishermen were active. There is also a theory that there was one more province in the west of the upper reaches of the Yoshino River, forming the Three Provinces of Awa. Under the Ritsuryo system, the two provinces (or three provinces) were unified, and seven districts were established: Nakata (later to become Meito and Meisei), Itano, Awa, Oe, Mima (later to become Miyoshi), Katsuura, and Naka (later to become Kaifu).

　南海道に属する上国(《延喜式》)。律令制以前の阿波は忌部（いんべ）氏が活動した北方の粟国（あわのくに）と三輪系の海人（あま）の活動した南方の長国（ながのくに）に二大別されていたとされる。なお，吉野川上流の西部に別の1国を考える阿波3国説もある。令制下，2国(あるいは3国)は合一し，名方(のちに名東，名西)，板野，阿波，麻殖（おえ），美馬（みま）(のち三好が分出)，勝浦，那賀(のち海部が分出)の7郡がおかれる。…
