Lake Yogo

It is a sunken lake in Nagahama City in the northern part of Shiga Prefecture. It has an area of ​​1.82 square kilometers, 2.3 kilometers north to south, 1.2 kilometers east to west, a circumference of 6.45 kilometers, a maximum depth of 13.3 meters (average depth 7.4 meters), and a storage capacity of 14.7 million cubic meters. The water surface is 132.8 meters above sea level, 48 meters higher than Lake Biwa. It is separated from Lake Biwa by Mt. Shizugatake to the south, but in the past, Lake Biwa was called "Ika no Oe," whereas Lake Biwa was called "Oe." It was also called "Kyo Lake" (Mirror Lake) because of its high transparency. It is also a place of scenic beauty that has been written about in many songs. The Teiouhennenki (Chronicles of the Emperor) records the legend of the Feathered Robe (Hagoromo Densetsu) in the 7th year of the Yoro era, and the "Kimonokakeyanagi" (Kimonokakeyanagi) where the celestial maiden hung her feathered robe is still on the north shore today. There have long been plans to turn Lake Yogo into a dam for flood control and water use, but the Yogo River Development Project and the Lake North Agricultural Water Use Project were implemented following the flooding of the Yogo River in 1953 (Showa 28). Today, the Yogo River and Lake Biwa water is stored in Lake Yogo through the Yogo Lake Waterway and Hannoura Water Supply Tunnel, and it plays an important role as a flood control and irrigation reservoir.

滋賀県北部、長浜市(ながはまし)にある陥没湖。面積1.82平方キロメートル、南北2.3キロメートル、東西1.2キロメートル、周囲6.45キロメートル、最大深度13.3メートル（平均深度7.4メートル）、貯水量1470万立方メートル。水面標高は132.8メートルで、琵琶(びわ)湖より48メートル高い。南の賤ヶ岳(しずがたけ)によって琵琶湖と隔てられているが、古くは、琵琶湖を「大江(おおえ)」とよぶのに対し、「伊香(いかご)の小江(おえ)」とよばれ、また透明度の高い湖として「鏡湖」ともよばれた。数多くの歌にも詠まれた名勝の地でもある。『帝王編年記』養老(ようろう)7年に羽衣伝説(はごろもでんせつ)が記されており、天女が羽衣を掛けたという「衣掛柳」が現在も北岸にある。余呉湖をダム化して治水・利水に役だてようとする計画は古くからあったが、1953年（昭和28）の余呉川洪水を契機として余呉川開発事業や湖北農業水利事業が実施され、現在では余呉湖導水路と飯浦(はんのうら)送水隧道(ずいどう)によって余呉川と琵琶湖の水が余呉湖に貯水され、洪水調節、灌漑(かんがい)用水池として重要な役割を果たしている。
