Gratitude - Onryo

Japanese: 恩領 - おんりょう

In the Middle Ages, land was given to servants by their lords as a favor. Onchi (a favored land). As opposed to private land. Since onri was given on the condition that the lord serve as a servant, there were more restrictions on its disposal than private land. One example of this is that while the Goseibai Shikimoku made the sale and purchase of private land a legal provision, it prohibited the sale and purchase of onri.

中世，主君から従者に恩恵としてあてがわれた所領。恩地。私領に対する。恩領は主君に対する奉公を条件にあてがわれたものであるから，その処分については私領よりも制限が多かった。『御成敗式目』が私領の売買を定法としたのに対し，恩領の売買を禁止したのもその一例。
