Japanese: ヨウム(洋鵡) - ヨウム（英語表記）African grey parrot

A bird of the Psittacidae family (illustration). Total length about 33 cm. A medium-sized parrot with an overall gray coloring. The lower back is gray-white, the flight feathers are black, and the tail feathers are red. They live in flocks in the tropical rainforests of West and Central Africa, flying around the treetops to find and eat fruit. They sometimes go to cultivated land near the forest and destroy crops. In the breeding season, they separate into pairs and use natural tree holes as they are or expand them with their beaks to make nests, where they lay two eggs per clutch. This bird has been kept in Europe for a long time and is known as one of the best mimics and most intelligent of all parrots.

オウム目オウム科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約33cm。全体が灰色をした中型のインコ。腰は灰白色，風切は黒く，尾羽は赤い。西･中央アフリカの熱帯降雨林に群れをつくってすみ，樹冠部を飛びまわって，果実を見つけて食べる。ときには森林近くの農耕地に出て，穀物を荒らすこともある。繁殖期にはつがいにわかれ，天然の樹洞をそのまま利用するか，あるいはくちばしで広げて巣穴にし，1腹2個の卵を産む。この鳥は，ヨーロッパで古くから飼育され，インコ類の中でももっとも物まねがうまく，才知に富む鳥として有名である。
