A port city in the southeastern part of Gujarat state, western India. Also known as Broach. Population 133,000 (1991). Located on the north bank of the mouth of the Narmada River, it has flourished as an important base for trade with the west on the west coast of India since the Maurya Dynasty in the 3rd century BCE. It appears in the Perspective of the Erythraean Sea, written around the 1st century, under the name Barygaza (called Bharkacha in Indian historical sources). In the early 17th century, the British established a trading post here shortly after their advance into India. Cotton and rice from the surrounding areas are distributed here, and industries such as cotton and glass are based here. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
