Tübingen - Tübingen (English spelling)

Japanese: チュービンゲン - ちゅーびんげん(英語表記)Tübingen
Tübingen - Tübingen (English spelling)

A university town in the center of the state of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. Population 81,300 (2000). The old town, which originated in the 12th century, is located on a hilly saddle between the Neckar River and its left bank tributary, the Ammer River. The old townscape, including Hohentübingen Castle (16th century) and the market square, has been well preserved. The new town spreads over the hills in the north and the valley bottom on the south bank (right bank) of the Neckar River. In addition to the university (founded in 1477), which became a base for Protestantism during the Reformation in the mid-16th century, there is also a national biology and virology research institute. Industries include textiles, machinery, metals, and precision machinery, and the publishing and printing industry is a distinctive feature of this academic city.
