Lanson, Gustave
Born: August 5, 1857 in Orléans
[Died] December 15, 1934. Paris. French critic and literary historian. Studied at the École Normale Supérieure (Higher Normal School). After teaching at lycées (higher secondary schools) in Paris and elsewhere, he became a professor at the University of Paris before becoming principal of his alma mater (1920-27). He further refined the method of empirical criticism following in the footsteps of Taine, and established a precise and steady research method that emphasized the historical and ideological background that produced the work, exerting a major influence on subsequent research into literary history. Major works include Histoire de la littérature française (1894), Manuel bibliographique de la littérature française moderne de1500à nos jours (4 volumes, 1909-14), Essais de méthode, de critique et d'histoire littéraire (65, edited by H. Peer).

The capital of Lang Son Province in northeastern Vietnam. It is located about 140 km northeast of the capital Hanoi, close to the border with China. It is a commercial center, and the surrounding area produces copper, zinc, bauxite, etc. In 1940, it was occupied by the Japanese army, which invaded from the Chinese side in an attempt to occupy "French Indochina". It is a key transportation point, and a railway line runs from Hanoi to Beijing in China.

ベトナム北東部,ランソン省の省都。首都ハノイの北東約 140kmにあり,中国との国境に近い。商業の中心地で,周辺では銅,亜鉛,ボーキサイトなどを産する。 1940年には「仏印」進駐をはかり,中国側から侵入した日本軍に占領された。交通の要地で,ハノイから中国のペキン (北京) 方面へ通じる鉄道が通る。
