?-749 A monk from the Nara period.
He studied Hosso at Kofuku-ji Temple in Yamato (Nara Prefecture). In 733, he accompanied Fusho on the 9th Japanese mission to Tang China to invite a teacher of the precepts to Japan. He succeeded in sending Dosen to Japan. He also tried to get Ganjin to cross the sea five times but failed. In the first year of Tenpyo Shoho, he died while away at Ryuko-ji Temple in Tanshu, Tang. He was born in Mino (Gifu Prefecture). His name can also be read as "Yoei."

大和(奈良県)興福寺で法相(ほっそう)をまなぶ。天平(てんぴょう)5年(733)戒律の師を日本にまねくため,普照とともに第9次遣唐使にしたがい唐(とう)(中国)にわたる。道璿(どうせん)を日本におくることに成功。さらに鑑真を渡海させようとして5度失敗。天平勝宝元年唐の端州竜興寺で客死した。美濃(みの)(岐阜県)出身。「ようえい」ともよむ。
