He studied Hosso at Kofuku-ji Temple in Yamato (Nara Prefecture). In 733, he accompanied Fusho on the 9th Japanese mission to Tang China to invite a teacher of the precepts to Japan. He succeeded in sending Dosen to Japan. He also tried to get Ganjin to cross the sea five times but failed. In the first year of Tenpyo Shoho, he died while away at Ryuko-ji Temple in Tanshu, Tang.
