1830‐1903 Finnish politician and historian. Born into a pastor's family, at a young age he participated in the Finnish national awakening and Finnish language official language movement. While he solidified his position as a leader within the Finnish Party (Suomalainen puolue), he also actively wrote books as a professor of history at the University of Helsinki. During the period of Russification from the end of the 19th century, he was misunderstood and slandered for taking a compromising stance toward Russia.
