A general term for invertebrates belonging to the phylum Echiura, or one of these species (illustration). All are marine, living in U-, J-, or irregularly shaped holes that they dig in the sand and mud of shallow seabeds, or in sand between coral reefs or in dead coral reefs. However, they have recently been found on the deep-sea floor of the North Pacific Ocean at depths of 7,000 to 10,000 meters. The body consists of a trunk and a proboscis that protrudes forward. The trunk is cylindrical or egg-shaped, and most are 8 to 10 cm long, but some can grow to about 50 cm. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
