…Born in Shiraz, he worked in business in a port city on the Persian Gulf, but soon left the city and went on a pilgrimage to Karbala, the holy city of Shiite Islam, where he became a disciple of theologian Kazim Rashti and studied the doctrines of the Shaikh sect. Before his death, his master predicted the reappearance of the Shiite Hidden Imam (Mahdi), and in 1844, against the backdrop of Iran's chaotic political and social situation and the religious state of the people's desire for the reappearance of the Mahdi, Seyyed Ali Mohammad declared himself the Bāb (meaning "gate" in Arabic). He criticized the corrupt clergy and preached the need for Shiite reform, equality between the sexes, and political and social reorganization, and was accepted as the emergence of the Mahdi, especially among farmers and small and medium-sized merchants, and his influence spread rapidly throughout the country. …
