A vast marshland facing Hama-naka Bay and Biwase Bay in Hama-naka Town, Hokkaido. It was said to have been sea until the Alluvial Epoch, but later it was turned into land by the deposition of sediment from ocean currents and rivers, and peatland developed. Many rivers, including the Biwase River, meander through the area, and oxbow lakes are scattered along the riverbeds. The climate is cool even in summer, and sea fog is common. In addition to wetland plants, the area is home to salt-loving plants such as Salicornia japonica, and animals such as red-crowned cranes and Yezo deer, as it is close to the sea. In June 1993, it was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. The central part is also designated as a natural monument as a peat-forming plant community. Take a bus from Hama-naka Station or Kushiro Station on the Nemuro Main Line. →Related topicsHamanaka [town] | Ramsar Convention Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
