An SCR is a type of silicon controlled rectifier that belongs to the reverse blocking three-terminal thyristor, a controllable rectifying element, and is the most widely used type. It is a silicon pnp-n four-layer switching element that was introduced by General Electric in 1958 and was called solid state thyratron at the time. Two-terminal silicon rectifying elements simply act as valves and do not have a control adjustment function themselves, but an SCR is a semiconductor rectifier with control capabilities, like a mercury rectifier with a control grid, and is capable of controlling large amounts of power with extremely small control inputs, with the added benefit of low loss.

シリコン制御整流器のことで，制御できる整流素子であるサイリスタとして逆阻止3端子サイリスタに属し，最も多く使われている。シリコンのp-n-p-n4層構造のスイッチ素子で，ゼネラル・エレクトリックから 1958年に発表され，当時は，固体サイラトロン solid state thyratronと呼ばれた。2端子シリコン整流素子では単なる弁作用であり，それ自体は制御調整機能をもっていないが，SCRは，制御グリッドつき水銀整流器のように，制御能力のある半導体整流器で，きわめて微小な制御入力によって大電力の制御が可能であり，しかも損失が少ないという特徴がある。
