Honda Tadakatsu

Japanese:
Honda Tadakatsu
Year of death: October 18, 1610 (December 3, 1610)
Year of birth: Tenbun 17 (1548)
A military commander and feudal lord in the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods. His childhood name was Nabenosuke, and he later went on to be called Heihachiro and Nakatsukasa Daifu. He was the eldest son of Honda Tadataka. His mother was the daughter of Uemura Shinrokuro Ujiyoshi. Born in Mikawa Province (Aichi Prefecture), he served Tokugawa Ieyasu just like his father, and in 1560, at the age of 13, he made his debut at the battle to capture Odaka Castle in Owari Province. He subsequently achieved outstanding military success in major battles during Ieyasu's reign, including the Mikawa Ikko Ikki, the Battle of Anegawa, the Battle of Mikatagahara, the Battle of Nagashino, and the Battle of Takatenjin, and was called one of the four great Tokugawa generals, along with Sakai Tadatsugu, Sakakibara Yasumasa, and Ii Naomasa. During the Honnoji Incident in 1582, when Ieyasu was traveling around Sakai and unsure of what to do, he advised him to return to Okazaki Castle, and he led Ieyasu back home safely after surviving the dangerous Iga Pass. When he entered the Kanto region in 1590, he was awarded 100,000 koku of land in Otaki, Kazusa Province (Chiba Prefecture). During the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, the main force of the Honda clan was led by his eldest son, Tadamasa, and under the command of Tokugawa Hidetada, attacked Ueda Castle in Shinshu, which was defended by Sanada Masayuki, while Tadakatsu, as a military inspector for the Eastern Army in the Tokaido region, took part in the battle with over 400 pages. In this battle, Tadakatsu was initially involved in the strategy near Ieyasu's main camp, but when the situation turned unfavorable for the Eastern Army, he went to the front line himself to direct the advance and retreat of the entire army, and he also performed heroic work by charging into the enemy camp several times with his accompanying soldiers. It is said that after the battle, Fukushima Masanori of the Eastern Army praised Tadakatsu's excellent military tactics. In the following year, he was transferred to Kuwana in Ise Province, a key location on the Tokaido road, with his stipend remaining at 100,000 koku, and his second son, Tadatomo, who served under Tadakatsu in the same battle, was given an additional 50,000 koku in Otaki, forming the basis for the prosperity of the Honda clan thereafter. It is said that Tadakatsu fought 57 battles since his first one, yet never bore a scar on his body, making him a military commander worthy of the name of the unparalleled brave warrior of all time. He passed away in Kuwana at the age of 63. His posthumous Buddhist name was Choyo Ryoshin Saiganji. <References> Murakami Sunao, "The Four Heavenly Kings of the Tokugawa" (Kitajima Masamoto, ed., "The Edo Shogunate," Vol. 1)
