First, Srednyaya Aziya (meaning Middle Asia) refers to the area occupied by the four West Turkestan republics of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, and is usually referred to as Srednyaya Aziya i Kazakhstan (meaning Central Asia and Kazakhstan) and refers to the whole of Central Asia within the Soviet Union. Next, Tsentral'naya Aziya (meaning Central Asia) refers to Central Asia outside the Soviet Union, namely East Turkestan, the Dzungar steppe, Tibet, and Mongolia.
