European Goldfinch (Goldfinch)

Japanese: ゴシキヒワ(五色鶸) - ゴシキヒワ（英語表記）goldfinch

A passerine bird of the family Fringillidae (illustration). Total length is about 12 cm. Sexes are the same color. The forehead to throat is red, the sides to cheeks are white, and the back of the head to neck is black. The back is grape-brown and the rump is white. The wings and tail are black, and there are wide yellow spots on the wings that are very noticeable when flying. It is distributed from Europe and North Africa to Central Asia. It lives in lowland forest edges and sparse forests, and is often found near human settlements. In Europe, it is familiar because it is often seen on trees in city parks and gardens. It breeds monogamously, but is not very territorial, and several pairs gather relatively close to each other to build nests.
