Yushima

Japanese: 湯島 - ゆしま

A small island located in the southwest of Kumamoto Prefecture, halfway between Oyano Island and the Shimabara Peninsula. It is part of Kami Amakusa City. It is covered with basalt over Neogene sandstone and shale. It is also called "Dango Island" (Dango Island) because the plots and collusion for the Shimabara Rebellion took place here. It is mainly involved in mandarin orange cultivation and fishing. There is a regular ferry service from Oyano Island. It belongs to Unzen-Amakusa National Park. Area: 0.52 ^km2 . Population: 474 (2000).

Yushima

This is a residential and educational district in the southeastern part of Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. It is home to Yushima Tenmangu Shrine, famous as the setting for Izumi Kyoka's "Fujoshizu," Yushima Seido, the center of Confucianism in the Edo period, and Tokyo Medical and Dental University.
