A fish of the Syngnathidae family. Locally known as sea slug. Reaches 10cm in length. Body color varies, but mostly brown. Inhabits the coasts from Japan to the southern part of the Korean peninsula. Stands upright with its tail entangled in seaweed. Males have a pouch on their ventral side, and protect the eggs laid by the female for 40-50 days. Because of their unusual shape, they are often dried and used as souvenirs. They are not often eaten. Closely related species include the giant sea slug (18cm in length, occasionally 30cm), the Japanese sea slug, and several others. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
