Popular Poetry - Minshu-shiha

A literary school. Around 1916 (Taisho 5), Masao Fukuda, Seigo Shiratori, Kazuo Kato and others learned from Tolstoy, Whitman, Traubel and others and began to choose the work and life of workers and farmers as the subject of their poetry from a democratic standpoint. In January 1918, they founded the magazine Minshu together with Soji Momota and Saika Tomita, and the name Minshu gradually became more common. Since then, poems and poets with democratic tendencies, including this school, have been called the Minshu school. The achievement of this school was that it brought realism and simplicity to poetry, but in exchange, poetry became loose and prosaic, and it was attacked by artists such as Hakushu Kitahara and Konosuke Hinatsu, and lost its influence from the end of the Taisho period onwards.
