Daijoin Temple

Japanese:
Daijoin Temple

The most famous monzeki (head priest) of Kofuku-ji Temple. Its former site is in Takabatake-cho, Nara City. It was founded in 1087 (the first year of the Kanji era) by Ryuzen Hoin. It developed when the children of the regents entered the temple, starting with Jinhan, the son of the third regent Fujiwara Morozane. During the Kamakura period, head priests from the Kujo and Ichijo families held the position of head priest of Zenjo-in and Ryugeju-in, and controlled branch temples such as Hasedera and Eikyu-ji, manors, temple monks, priests, and various commercial and industrial establishments, forming a major influence on a par with Ichijo-in. It gradually declined after the Muromachi period. In the early modern period, it continued to exist as a temple with 951 koku of red seal land, but after the Meiji Restoration, it was abolished when its head priest returned to secular life.
