[Died] September 18, 1830, London. British critic and essayist. His father was a Unitarian minister, and he also aspired to become a minister, but after meeting Coleridge, he switched to literature. The details of his experiences are detailed in his essay My First Acquaintance with Poets (1823). He was also friends with Lamb and L. Hunt. He contributed many critiques and essays to various magazines, showing his rich talent, albeit fragmentary, and is recognized as a leading figure in Romantic criticism alongside Coleridge. His major works include Characters of Shakespeare's Plays (17), a collection of lectures titled On the English Poets (18), On the English Comic Writers (19), Lectures on the Dramatic Literature of the Age of Elizabeth (20), and a collection of essays titled Table Talk (21) and The Plain Speaker (26).
