Basic map - Kihonzu (English)

Japanese: 基本図 - きほんず（英語表記）basic map

A map of the largest scale, which is a systematically organized, uniform map format for the territory of each country, is used as a base map for various maps. In Japan, the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan's 1:50,000 topographical maps and 1:25,000 topographical maps are the nationally organized series of base maps. The 1:5,000 and 1:2500 National Land Base Maps for urban areas, the Forestry Agency's Forest Base Maps for mountainous areas, and the Hydrographic Agency's Ocean Base Maps for coastal sea areas are also in the national series of base maps. Internationally, the International Map Series (IMW) series, which is maintained by the United Nations as the information center, and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as the information center, are the international series of base maps. They are created voluntarily by member countries according to uniform standards.

国ごとに領土について，体系的に整備した一定の縮尺で統一的な地図図式によって表わした最も大きい縮尺の精密な地図で，いろいろな地図の基図となるもの。日本では国土地理院の5万分の1地形図と2万 5000分の1地形図が全国的に整備された基本図のシリーズとなっている。都市地域についての 5000分の1および 2500分の1国土基本図，山林地区についての林野庁の森林基本図，沿海部海域についての水路部の海の基本図などが，それぞれ基本図のシリーズとなっている。国際間では，国連が整備の情報センターとなっている国際 100万分の1図 (IMW) シリーズと，国際民間航空機構 (ICAO) が整備の情報センターとなっている国際航空図 (WAC) が基本図の国際的なシリーズとなっている。それらは統一規格によって加盟国ごとに自主的に作成するものである。
