A lower garment worn by women as formal attire in Pakistan, the Punjab region of India, and Uttar Pradesh. It looks like a long skirt, but it is actually trousers, fitted to the body from the waist to above the knees, but has a large amount of flared gathers on a positive bias from above the knees to the ankles. Princesses of the Mughal Empire wore loose Iranian-style clothing at court, and the gharara was one of them. [Matsumoto Toshiko] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
