Charles Robert Cockerell

British architect and archaeologist. After becoming a pupil of R. Smirke, he went on the Grand Tour and studied classical architecture in Greece, Asia Minor and Italy, and became internationally known for his excavations of temples such as those at Aegina and Bassai. With a deep knowledge of classical style and a style based on his sympathy for the strength of Greek sculpture, he designed the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford, 1845) and the Bank of England (Liverpool, 1849). In his later years, he lectured architecture at the Royal Academy and served as president of the British Institute of Architects.

イギリスの建築家，考古学者。R.スマークの弟子となった後，グランド･ツアーにでてギリシア，小アジア，イタリアで古典建築を研究し，アイギナ島，バッサイなどの諸神殿の発掘で国際的に知られた。古典様式への深い造詣，ギリシア彫刻の力強さへの共感に基づく作風で，アシュモリアン美術館(オックスフォード，1845)，イングランド銀行(リバプール，1849)を設計。晩年，ローヤル･アカデミーで建築を講じ，イギリス建築家協会会長も務めた。
