1788‐1863 British architect and archaeologist. After becoming a pupil of R. Smirke, he went on the Grand Tour and studied classical architecture in Greece, Asia Minor and Italy, and became internationally known for his excavations of temples such as those at Aegina and Bassai. With a deep knowledge of classical style and a style based on his sympathy for the strength of Greek sculpture, he designed the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford, 1845) and the Bank of England (Liverpool, 1849).
