Accidental Butterfly - Guusancho

It refers to butterflies that do not natively inhabit an area (have no successive generations) and that have strayed from another area or invaded temporarily. In addition to foreign butterflies being discovered in Japan, there are also cases where butterflies from mountainous areas are caught on the plains, and where butterflies from the south spread northward from summer to autumn when temperatures rise (at this time the entire lineage dies out as they cannot withstand the cold of winter). When the latter case occurs almost every year, it is sometimes called a "seasonal butterfly." The term "accidental butterfly" has a slightly different nuance from "lost butterfly," but in Japan today it is used with roughly the same meaning.

その地域に本来生息していない（世代を継続していない）チョウで、他の地域から迷入したもの、あるいは一時的に侵入してきたものをいう。外国のチョウが日本で発見されるような場合のほか、山地のチョウが平地でとれる場合、また南方のチョウが温度が高くなる夏から秋にかけて北方に広がるような場合（このときには冬の寒さに耐えることができないのでその系統は全部死滅する）もある。最後のケースがほぼ毎年恒常的におこる場合には「候チョウ(こうちょう)」ということもある。偶産チョウの用語は「迷(めい)チョウ」とはいくらかニュアンスが違うが、現在日本ではほぼ同じ意味に使われる。
