Strictly speaking, it should refer to a stone container in which the body is directly placed, but what is commonly called a sarcophagus often includes things that should be called something different, such as a stone coffin for a wooden coffin containing a body, a stone ossuary for storing cremated or reburied bones, or a stone coffin for placing an ossuary. In addition, small structures such as box-type sarcophagi, which are simply made by combining natural slabs of stone inside a pit and often do not even have a bottom stone, are also called sarcophagi.
