Pneumatic hammer

There are drop hammers, which use a winch to winch a weight and drop it onto the pile head to drive the pile; pneumatic hammers, which use steam or compressed air to move a piston in a cylinder installed at the pile head up and down and strike the pile head with a weight attached to the bottom of the piston (there are single-acting hammers that use compressed air only to push up the weight, and double-acting hammers that also use compressed air to drop the weight to speed up the fall); and diesel hammers, which use the up and down movement of a piston driven by a diesel engine to strike the pile head. Drop hammers are also used to drive small diameter piles, but with the adoption of large steel pipe piles, diesel hammers, which have a large striking force, are now the mainstream pile drivers. …

…杭を地中に深く打ち込むのに使用される基礎工事用機械。おもりをウィンチで巻き上げ，これを杭頭に落下させて杭を打ち込むドロップハンマー，蒸気または圧縮空気を利用して，杭頭に設置したシリンダー内のピストンに上下運動を行わせ，ピストン下端に取り付けられたおもりによって杭頭に打撃力を与える気動ハンマー(おもりの押上げのみに圧気を用いる単動ハンマーと，落下にも圧気を加えて落下速度を速くした複動ハンマーがある)，ディーゼルエンジンによるピストンの上下運動を利用して，杭頭に打撃力を与えるディーゼルハンマーなどがある。小径の杭の打込みにはドロップハンマーも用いられるが，大型の鋼管杭が採用されるようになったことに伴って，現在では打撃力が大きいディーゼルハンマーが杭打機の主流となっている。…
